A good time with family and
friends
It was great to finally arrive at my sister
Margaret’s house where I felt we could relax in peace after over 3 months on
the road. She is shortly due to head off
for 3 weeks in Mexico and Janet and I are house sitting while she will be
away. The weather wasn’t being too “English” when
we arrived, and a day after we arrived we were on the touch line cheering on my
great-nephew Oscar on the rugby pitch in beautiful sunshine – It brought back
lots of memories of our time doing this with our boys !
Margaret’s birthday was two days later, and
we met most of the family at a pub for a delicious lunch, after which we moved on
to William’s work base where they had a bar and a big TV so we could watch
Australia scrape through in their Rugby World Cup game against Argentina – Roll
on the final against NZ ! A great day,
and Margaret’s birthday suitably celebrated.
A couple of days later my son Damien,
partner Hannah and their daughter Poppie came down from where they are
temporarily staying up near Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire. Janet hasn’t
seen them for a while (I saw them all in July) so she was really excited to see
them again, and we had a lovely time. Once again the sun was shining, so at
lunch time Margaret took time off from packing for Mexico and we all walked
down to the beach. There was a
restaurant where we could sit outside, and right beside us was a playground
so
Poppie could have some fun while we waited for out food – And she quickly made
friends with a little girl and had a great time on the swings. After our lunch Margaret had to return to her
packing while Damien, Hannah and Poppie had to head back up the road to
Buckinghamshire.
On the 30th October we were up
early to take Margaret to catch he bus to Heathrow for her flight to Mexico –
And it was POURING ! Is this the end of
the unusually mild weather we have been enjoying ? We managed to get Margaret away without
anyone getting too
wet, and shortly afterwards set off up to Bulford near
Amesbury to see my niece Polly and her children Joe and Florence, and hopefully
her husband Tom if he made it back from work in time – He is in the Army. It was a lovely drive up there – All the
autumn colours as we drove through the New Forest, and then through some
delightful English countryside up to Princes Risborough.
Damien and Poppie were also coming down
again (Hannah was busy doing an assignment for her online degree), and they
arrived not
long after us. After a
compulsory play time for all the kids, and a delicious lunch, we headed out for
a walk / bike ride (ie kids on bikes, adults walking !). Poppie had a hard time
working out why Florence (of a similar age) was so much more capable on a bicycle
than she was – Time on bike ! Nevertheless we had a great time, found wild
mushrooms and fairy circles, and then an tyre suspended from a tree as a swing
which kept the kids happy for ages !
We went back to the house for tea, and
before long Tom arrived home. It was
great to see him again, although I think Poppie got a bit of a surprise when he
walked in wearing his full military outfit !
After cake and tea, Janet and I left to head home, while Damien stayed
on for a while so Poppie could have time with her cousins once removed (I think
!), and they went home later.
A couple of days later the weather was a lot
better, and we headed up to Buckinghamshire under blue skies to see Damien,
Hannah and Poppie before they headed back to Australia. They have been staying with Hannah’s Aunt and
Uncle for the last few weeks before they go home, and we had been invited up to
meet them all, have some chile con carne, and enjoy some fireworks. Oh, and also watch the Rugby Union World Cup
final between Australia and New Zealand.
Unfortunately Australia couldn’t withstand New Zealand’s onslaught, but
it was really nice to meet Hannah’s Uncle and Aunt and the rest of their family
– They couldn’t have made us more welcome, and it was great to meet Hannah’s
relatives. Just sad that we had to leave after the fireworks to head back to
Milford.
Unfortunately Damien, Hannah and Poppie
have had to go back to Australia because Poppie starts school in the New Year
and they need to get organized for that.
So in the meantime Janet and I are staying at Margaret’s while she is
away, spending some time with our nephew, nieces, and their families who all
live nearby, and generally relaxing and catching up on the many things that do
not easily get done while one is travelling.
