0384 Ciry Le Noble to Verdun

0384 Ciry le Noble to Verdun
19th October 2015

The next morning it was clear but cold and frosty.  After some coffee and hot bread and cheese for breakfast, we hit the road to head north – Next destination Brussels.   However, Joel and Brigitte had recommended that we take time to stop in Verdun, close to the Belgian border. We knew little about it other than the name, but as it was a long drive to Brussels, we decided a break in Verdun was the way to go.  Initially we also wanted to get to Rheims, but we eventually decided this was too far out of our way.

The drive NE across France was great – A clear sunny day and we stayed on the B roads all the way, passing through some beautiful countryside, little towns and villages, and larger walled towns like Langres.  We were trying to get to Brussels, but if one wanted to just spend time wandering around this part of France, it would be very easy to pass one or two weeks just enjoying all that the area has to offer.

We arrived in Verdun at about 5 pm, and we had a camp site targeted for the night.  However, we were once again foiled by the advance of winter, and arriving at the gates of the camp site found it had been closed since the end of September. I know that there are not so many people travelling and camping at this time of year, but, based on the number of camper vehicles we see on the road, there are still quite a few out there, all with no where to stay.  We decided to explore further down the narrow dirt track
where the camp site was located, and ended up going about 3 kms down through the fields until we came to a dead end – The only things around us were cows !  As it was starting to get dark and cold, we decided that this was a perfect place to stop, so we set up camp right there as the mist came down and the temperatures dropped quickly.  BY the time we had eaten it was about 4 deg C, and we could only see about 20 yards into the mist.  But with our warm sleeping bags we were warm and toasty, and looking forward to exploring Verdun in the morning.
